What Is Belly Dance?

The sistrum, used as a liturgical instrument in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church throughout the centuries, is still played with a specific dance. In this way we might even approach the experience that Egyptians may have had as depicted in pyramid paintings. In ancient Egyptian paintings, harps are often seen, along with a long necked string instrument and something called a sistrum.



It effectively gives two different costume variations in a single dance. At the very beginning of the dance, the dancer might do some soft, graceful movements with her arms, hip sways, undulations, etc. She then transitions from those to removing one side of the veil, often while spinning and using her eyes and movement of her free hand to direct attention away from the hand that's peeling off the veil. Or, we may play a song that’s choreographed in certain places and “improvised” in-between . Some songs are truly hard to choreograph entirely , and that’s actually the point of that style – to improvise and go with the flow.

However, some folks consider it to be a form of Baladi, since many of the working class people who comprise its audience are the children of immigrants from the countryside. Baladi is an improvised cultural dance performed by a soloist. Baladi truly is the country cousin, the one done by ordinary people for enjoyment and socializing, occasionally glammed up for the stage. The movements are large and the joyous feeling is valued more than precise technique. The late great dancer and choreographer, Ibrahim “Bobby” Farrah, of New York, was a male belly dancer of Lebanese heritage who perpetuated the cultivation of Modern Egyptian dance style in America. In common with most folk dances, there is no universally codified naming scheme for belly dance movements. When belly dancers dance to mahraganat they move their bodies faster, shake their breasts and hips in a vulgar manner or even point to sensitive parts of their bodies. This is because of the beats of the music and sometimes the vulgar words of the songs that the dancers chose to attract the attention of the audience. Such type of dancing is rejected by traditional dancers who believe that every move they make should be guided by music and should be artistic rather than vulgar.
